Anti Bird Net for Windows, AC Units and Ducts: The Gaps Everyone Forgets

Netting the balcony is only half the job. How to protect windows, AC outdoor units, ventilation shafts and ducts — the openings where pigeons actually nest.

By Perfect Bird Netting Service ·

Anti bird net fitted over a window and an AC outdoor unit ledge

Half the callbacks we attend are not failed nets. They are correctly netted balconies with an unnetted duct twelve feet away — and the birds simply moved. Pigeons need a fist-sized gap and a sheltered ledge, and Indian buildings supply both in places most people never inspect.

The five openings people miss

  • The AC outdoor unit ledge — sheltered, warm and directly beneath a chajja.
  • The pipe penetration where refrigerant lines pass through the net line.
  • Ventilation and plumbing shafts serving bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Kitchen exhaust and chimney duct mouths.
  • The gap between a window's outer frame and the security grill.

If your balcony is already netted and droppings are still appearing, one of those five is open. Walk the perimeter and look for feathers, not droppings — feathers mark the roost.

Netting an AC outdoor unit

The unit itself must stay serviceable and must breathe. The correct approach is a three-sided wrap that boxes the ledge in 25 mm mesh, with a laced access flap on the service side so a technician can open it without cutting.

RequirementSpecification
Mesh25 mm UV HDPE — 90%+ open area, no airflow loss
Clearance from coilMinimum 150 mm so discharge is unobstructed
AccessLaced flap, not a cut opening
Pipe penetrationSleeved and cord-closed around the line
FixingSS hooks into the slab or the wall face, not the unit

Never fix netting to the AC unit's own casing. Vibration works the fixing loose within months and the unit's warranty may object.

Windows: net, mesh or both?

A bird net and a mosquito net solve different problems and cannot substitute for each other. Bird netting is 25 mm and stops birds; mosquito mesh is fine polyester or fibreglass and stops insects while cutting some airflow.

Pleated mosquito nets are our other core product line — retractable, track-mounted, and suitable for windows and full-height balcony doors. See all our services for the range, and the pleated mosquito net buying guide for mesh and track specification.

Shafts, light wells and ducts

A shaft is the worst place to have a nest and the hardest to clean, because access usually means a rope or a dismantled false ceiling. Netting at the shaft mouth, at roof level, closes the whole column in one go and is far cheaper than netting each floor's shaft window.

Planning a shaft net

  • Net at the top of the shaft so the entire column is protected by one panel.
  • Leave a laced service panel for plumbing access.
  • Clear existing nesting material from every floor before closing — anything trapped inside will die and smell.
  • Use black mesh in a shaft; it is less visible and holds up in low-airflow humidity.
Close a shaft with birds still in it and you have bought yourself a fortnight of complaints.

Kitchen and chimney duct mouths

Duct outlets carry grease-laden warm air, which is why pigeons like them and why standard mesh clogs there. Use a coarse 25 mm net set well clear of the outlet mouth, expect to clean it annually, and never fit fine mesh directly across an exhaust — it will block and back-pressure the chimney.

Stilt parking, atriums and staircase openings

Common areas are usually a society decision rather than a flat-owner one. Stilt parking beams are netted between column lines, staircase ventilation openings are netted at the face, and atriums need intermediate cables because of span. Larger-span logic is covered in warehouse bird netting.

The full-building checklist

Walk this list before you sign off a bird-proofing job
LocationTreatment
Balcony opening25 mm net across the full opening
AC ledgeThree-sided net wrap with access flap
Refrigerant pipe penetrationSleeved and closed
Bathroom / kitchen shaftNet at shaft mouth
Window sillsNet or spike strip

Terrace machine room ledgesSpikes

Where a ledge cannot be netted, spikes take over — the split is explained in bird spikes vs bird netting.

Conclusion

Bird-proofing is a perimeter exercise, not a product purchase. Net the openings, wrap the AC ledge, close the shaft at the top, sleeve the pipe penetration and spike whatever is left. Miss one, and the birds will find it before you do.

Frequently asked

Can bird netting be fitted over an AC outdoor unit?

Yes, as a three-sided 25 mm mesh wrap with at least 150 mm clearance from the coil and a laced access flap for servicing. The net is anchored to the slab or wall, never to the unit casing.

Does an anti bird net block airflow to the AC?

No. A 25 mm mesh has over 90% open area, so discharge is effectively unaffected as long as the correct clearance is maintained.

Is a bird net the same as a mosquito net?

No. A bird net is a 25 mm mesh that stops birds; a mosquito net is a fine pleated or fibreglass mesh that stops insects. Many homes fit both — bird net outside, pleated mosquito net at the frame.

Where should a shaft be netted?

At the top of the shaft, so a single panel closes the whole column. Clear all nesting material from every floor before sealing it.
