Why Pigeon Droppings Are a Real Health Hazard (Not Just a Mess)

Pigeon droppings carry fungal and bacterial risks including histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis. Here is what the health risk looks like and how to remove it safely.

Bird spikes protecting a building ledge from pigeon roosting

Most people call us because of the smell and the stains. The stronger reason to act is what dried droppings do to the air in your home.

The three documented risks

  • Histoplasmosis — a fungal lung infection linked to soil and bird droppings, described by the US CDC as a respiratory risk during cleanup of accumulated droppings.
  • Cryptococcosis — a fungus associated with pigeon droppings that can cause lung and, in immunocompromised people, central nervous system infection.
  • Allergens and mites — dried droppings and abandoned nests carry bird mites and airborne particulates that aggravate asthma.

The common thread is disturbance. Dried droppings are hazardous mainly when swept, scraped or brushed, because that is when spores become airborne. Feeding and nesting also block air-conditioner outdoor units and rooftop drains, which is a separate maintenance problem.

How to clean safely

  • Wet the area first with a disinfectant spray — never dry-sweep.
  • Wear an N95 mask, gloves and disposable clothing.
  • Bag the waste, do not sweep it off the balcony onto neighbours below.
  • Disinfect the surface and let it dry fully before installing anything.

Prevention is the only permanent fix

Repellent gels wash away, plastic owls stop working in a week, and ultrasonic devices have no reliable effect on pigeons. Physical exclusion — a properly tensioned net across the opening, or stainless spikes on ledges — is the only method that keeps working every day for years. We clean and disinfect the area as part of the installation so you are not left handling contaminated debris.

Frequently asked

Should I clean droppings before installation?

No need — our team cleans and disinfects the area as part of the job, using wet methods and protective gear.

Are bird spikes harmful to pigeons?

No. Blunt-tipped stainless spikes are a humane deterrent. They make a ledge uncomfortable to land on, they do not injure birds.
