HDPE vs Nylon Bird Net: Which One Should You Actually Install?

A practical comparison of HDPE and nylon bird nets — UV life, strength, visibility, cost and the situations where each material is the right call.

Both materials stop birds. They do not age the same way, and that is where the real decision lies.

HDPE (high-density polyethylene)

Made from monofilament strands with UV stabilisers added at the melt stage. It resists sunlight, does not absorb water, and holds its shape through the monsoon. A virgin-grade HDPE net rated for Indian conditions lasts eight to ten years on a fully exposed south-facing balcony.

Nylon

Braided, softer, and knot-free variants are gentler — one reason it is preferred for child and pet safety nets. Nylon absorbs moisture and degrades faster under direct UV, so it performs best in shaded balconies, internal shafts, ducts and covered corridors.

Side by side

  • UV life: HDPE 8–10 years, nylon 3–5 years in direct sun.
  • Visibility: HDPE monofilament is thinner and disappears from a distance; nylon is slightly more visible.
  • Strength for impact: knot-free nylon has better elasticity, which is why it is used for fall safety.
  • Cost: nylon is cheaper up front, HDPE is cheaper per year of service.

Our recommendation

Open balconies, terraces, factory ceilings and anything in direct sun get HDPE. Child safety, pet safety and shaded internal openings get knot-free nylon. If a vendor recommends the same material for every job, they are selling stock, not a solution.

Frequently asked

Which net is more invisible from outside?

Transparent HDPE monofilament in 1.4–2 mm thickness is the least visible from street level.

Can nylon be used on an open balcony?

It can, but expect a shorter life. For open, sun-facing balconies we recommend UV-stabilised HDPE.
