A bird net and a child safety net can look similar from the sofa. They are engineered for completely different loads, and using one in place of the other is dangerous.
The five checks
- Mesh opening of 25 mm or less, so a child's head or limb cannot pass through.
- Knot-free braided nylon — knots create weak points and abrasion under load.
- Anchors drilled into the structural slab or column, never into plaster or false ceiling.
- Perimeter steel wire rope of at least 2 mm, tensioned with turnbuckles.
- A written warranty covering both material and installation.
Where it should cover
The net must cover the full opening from railing top to slab soffit. A net stopping at railing height leaves the exact gap children climb through. Internal staircases, atriums and duct openings deserve the same treatment.
Does it look bad?
Transparent or white nets sit almost invisibly against the sky, and they are removable. Many families take them down once the youngest child is past the climbing age, which the fixing system allows without damaging the wall.
The net is the last line of defence — install it as if it will actually be needed one day, because that is the day it matters.

Yes. Its mesh is finer than a bird net, so it excludes birds as well.
Can it be removed later?
Yes. The anchors stay in place and the net can be unlaced and taken down without breaking the wall.
